Three Sorrows

A novel on the hunt for a publisher

An "enchanting" story, "deeply moving" and "impossible to put down," that raises "hundreds of questions" and "should stand out among other debuts," readers say.

'I won't be able to sleep until I hear the rest of the story.'

What is Three Sorrows?

Three sorrows is the story of what broke Maria’s heart when she was a child, something which continues to deeply hurt her in adulthood. She tells the story herself, as an adult, hoping that the act of telling can finally heal her heart.

When Maria was eight, her mother left her house and her family, and didn’t return, leaving Maria in search for her mother, for the reasons for her disappearance, and for how she should live her life in order for her remaining loved ones not to leave her as well.

A thrilling and moving story about emotional pain, motherhood, independent women, the power of the stories we tell, the sedating power of the sea, and how to live.

Written in Dutch, fully translated into English.

The English translation has been praised as much as the Dutch original. One American reader said: “The story shook me to my core,” and: “It resonated with a depth I rarely experience with a book.”

Another American said: “The beauty of his writing is transfixing in English, a language which he has mastered. The book deserves a wide audience in both languages.”

What others think of the novel

In six years, I wrote my debut novel Three Pains. According to readers, it is a "enchanting" story, "deeply moving" and "impossible to put down," which "raises hundreds of questions" and "should stand out to a publisher among other debut novels.”

A reading night in a monastery

On my travels, for example, I met an American who had been reading novels continuously for sixty years. It was in an Irish monastery where I sought silence to translated my book and he visited old friends.

The American told us life stories which he intertwined with novel scenes. The wisdom he shared with us he had sometimes received from fictional characters. And he handed out the books he had finished to local prisoners, walking past their cells. 'You might like this.'

Crying listeners

And one evening I read from my book, in gratitude for the monks' hospitality. It was in the monastery's library, by the fireplace, holding a pint of Guinness.

And as I read, the American, in his seventies, had to cry. He even had to leave the room.

I followed him.

"This tragedy reminds me of an episode in my own life," he said.

‘Do you want to have a hug?’

‘Yes.’

To feel his emotion softened it, and we ate cake, which also helped.

A deep catharsis of tears

His crying moved me so much that I gave him the entire manuscript, so that he could keep reading and learn of the ending.

"I read it in one day," he wrote, who has been reading continuously since he was nine years old, "and it resonated with a depth that I rarely experience with a book. The last chapters were stunning, and evoked a deep, deep catharsis of tears. It shook me to my roots, in a good way, helping me be in touch with my own pain, in a very cleansing way.'

For a moment I hesitated to stop publishing my book. After all, it had softened a bruised heart, what more did I wish for?

Biographer of the celebrated Dutch writer Godfried Bomans

But there was another voice, belonging to teacher of Dutch literature, Gé Vaartjes, a man who breathes books.

He has been reading since early childhood, unlike me. He writes about writers, including the biographies of the celebrated Dutch author Godfried Bomans, of Top Naeff and Herman de Man. And he taught about our language's literarure, at grammar school, with stories that enchanted me and explained stories. More people than just me praised him for that, including the poet Alfred Schaffer.

'It should stand out among other debuts'

And twelve years after my graduation we reconnected. First we talked  about everything that was important and then also about my book. In the weeks that followed he read a hundred pages.

'It is authentic,' he wrote me, 'well-written, thematically interesting, with often beautiful original phrasing, a stunning eye for detail, good observations of the fictional characters, which captivate and make me curious for more. It should stand out among the other debut novels a publisher sees.'

Those who already read the story

And so I created this website, with the opening chapters which hundreds of people have now read or listened to. They are the ones who speak of being deeply moved. They are the ones who hate me for posting only three chapters, and not the 25 that my teacher read, or the 82 that the crying American read.

First, these readers were the people who already liked me while I was still writing, and those who like you often like what you do.

Then came the acquaintances who heard what I had written. They owed me nothing, but were intrigued and moved all the same.

And now so many people are reading the story without us sharing a history. Their opinion is not distorted by friendship, and so their support means a lot to me.

Novel on the hunt for a publisher

Because Three Sorrows is on the hunt for a publisher.

If the book appeals to readers, then perhaps to editors as well? I have no idea about that. I am just a beginner in need of an editor's experience.

Together, we can make the book more powerful and sell it to more moved readers, who will then no longer hate us, because the entire book lies safely in their hands, or on their nightstand, or in their briefcase for the train ride home.

So what do those readers say?

'Before I hear the rest of this story, I won't be able to sleep.

It is rare for a story to be so gripping. That takes true talent from a writer. The detailed descriptions are extraordinary and keep you fascinated during every second of the journey.

It is extraordinary how such a heartbreakingly sad story can still be so heartwarmingly beautiful.

Above all, I recommend the audio version because Matthijs has the most pleasant voice and he is an inspiring storyteller at heart.'

Maria Mäenpää

'Reading the first chapters was heartbreaking and powerful.

The emotional revelation of the mother who [spoiler], imagining what it must feel like for a small child to have her mother [spoiler], that was powerful.

I had to read it in one sitting. It was very engaging and very well written.

I have a thousand thoughts about your story so far. I think a good book stays in your mind after you read it.

I'd like to read it when it's published.’

Mario, an avid reader from Slovakia

‘Three Sorrows is a compelling, skilfully written novel that engulfs the reader in the sensorial experience of Maria’s story, leading them on an intriguing exploration of the effects of trauma on human relationships and the psyche.’

Jennifer Duke, author of Back to the Bonnet, a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

‘Matthijs Meijer van Putten is Matthew to me. I am an anglophone and was privileged to be one of the first to hear Three Sorrows read in English by the author. The beauty of his writing is transfixing in English, a language which he has mastered. The book deserves a wide audience in both languages.’

Thomas Crutcher, Ireland

'The story is beautifully written. We have listened to the first three chapters together and are fully immersed in it already, and want to hear and read more. The story moves both of us because we recognise our own situation, which makes it even more special. When the entire book is available, we would love to hear it.'

Yorick and Lisa, The Hague

‘Matthijs has a real talent for writing. His descriptive ability is excellent and really creates and carries the various moods.’

Robert Bulbrook, Canada.

From an email by a reader:

'While on the train I heard a conversation about your book. After having plucked up the courage, I asked for the title, and then I was lucky to have enough time (Roermond to Amsterdam) to read the first chapters.

In that hour, you’ve fascinated me tremendously, you write expressively, and the perspective of the child touches me enormously. I hope you will soon find a publisher (so that I can read the rest).’

Alec Oosterink

‘I had to make an effort not to cry.’

Mercedes, The Hague
